Big & Tall

Cities and metropolitian areas have so many buildings. They are everywhere and they are all so tall. Some can be a bit scary.

Chris Nolan's Presentation

Chris Nolan’s presentation was very interesting. There was a lot of material that I already knew, but there were also plenty of subjects I didn’t. It is obvious that Google has to continue updating and changing how it is formatted in order to keep its users happy. I also knew that Google ranked the pages based on the number of hits, the number of times people link to a webpage and the number of key words present in an article. It was fairly obvious that it linked common ideas when a search was done and that popular websites show up more often than academic ones. I was surprised to find out that country codes are used to limit where the web pages are from. I didn’t know that you can click ‘control- F’ to search a word on a webpage.

Pictures That Lie

I chose the picture of OJ Simpson in Time magazine that has been altered because it shows how the media can influence the feelings of a person by simply making them look a certain way. Most of America already thought he did the crime and was wrongly convicted, but the picture makes him appear as though he is more evil than he really is. This picture was originally his mug shot and shows up unaltered in Newsweek. The picture was altered to look older, darker and scarier because the media was trying to sway America’s view of OJ to match theirs through the picture. Yes, the manipulation was harmful because it causes the people and courts to have a tilted view of him (even if he deserved to go to jail).

CLT Resources

The CLT room was very interesting. It has a lot of opportunities for a variety of activieties. The equipment there is so technologically advanced and they continue to update it to stay on top of the changing times. The room has a lot of Apple computers that are available if we get a project that requires Apple software. It is also a very quite room, unlike the third floor, so that would be a good place to do homework for Computer Skills class; the people there would also be a good resource. I think the neatest thing was the big screen that could project a videochat... that could come in handy someday. I never knew this place was there, nor have I ever used it before. It amazed me that the people who worked there actually understand all the equipment in those rooms. WOW! Great tour :)

Copyright

Many say plagiarism is ethically wrong because it is considered stealing ideas from someone else. The law fortifies that thought by forbidding plagiarism and by making this act illegal. Others think the material that is available to one is available to all with no penalty or restrictions. But there are restrictions called Copyright. Copyright protects the creators by allowing them to control the reproductions and profits of their works.

In my opinion, it is the right thing to give credit where credit is due but the restrictions that are in place now might be a little too harsh. For example, if a teacher wants to copy a book for a class then that teacher should be able to do so with little trouble because it is for education. I think that, especially for education, there should be no need to site every single source or go by copyright laws. Overall, the laws that have been put in place to protect the creator are sufficient and not much needs to be changed.

My Trinity Network Diagram

The tour was pretty neat. Strangely enough, the room with all the servers was slightly hot, even though the cold air was obviously coming out of the vents. Overall the information was interesting, but it was hard to hear.

This diagram was very intricate and detailed. It took a lot of time and thought in order to make sure everything made sense.

Top Tech Tip

I learned why the school forces us to use their software, instead of being able to use our own. Mainly it is because they want consistancy to be able to track things that go into the network. It is a good way to keep everything under control and safe. After learning these facts, I deleted my own antivirus software, because I was also informed that having both Sophos and a personal antivirus software can damage your computer.
